For The Island Stories contribution to Plymouth History Festival 2018, local historian Jon Brown led a history walk around Barne Barton. Jon’s narrative outlined the origins of the name Barton Barton, the creation of the ‘island’ by the development of the railways in the 19th century, the deployment of US troops from Saltash Passage for the D-Day landing and discoveries through the ages at Kinterbury Creek and much, much more.
Many of those who joined the walk had never been to Barne Barton and were surprised at the layers of historical evidence and anecdotes present in the area. Refreshments at the Regen Space in Roberts Road were welcomed by the 17 walkers following their two hour walk over hilly terrain. We had a chance to discuss old maps of the area, archive photos and newspaper clippings and Clarion Housing Group’s plans for the regeneration of the old naval estate.
Thanks to Jon, Ryan Cheetham our Island Stories volunteer and all those who joined us for a fantastic day!
